Exorcising Hitler's Ghost: The Holocaust, Denial, & the Importance of History

The Holocaust remains one of the darkest chapters in human history and the development of the 20th century. For historians, it has also become a target of lies, invention, and distortion from a variety of malicious sources who have challenged its very existence. In Exorcising Hitler’s Ghost, we review the development of the Holocaust and how the rise of Holocaust Denial.

Our goals are two-fold:

  1. Understand how historians have verified the reality and dynamics of the Nazi “final solution” and extermination plans for the Jews of Europe and other targets.
  1. Deconstruct how and why people deny the Holocaust and how they have profited by these distortions, culminating in the famous “History on Trial” case of David Irving vs. Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin books.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • The origins of the Holocaust and major debates surrounding its creation.
  • The development of the Nazi extermination policies from words to deeds in war and peace.
  • The emergence of Holocaust Denial as a post-war phenomenon.
  • How historians challenge Holocaust denial with historical methods, evidence, and argument.
