Cold War: A Brief History

This course focuses primarily on a Brief History of Cold War 1.0 (NATO / USA vs. Warsaw Pact / USSR) and will introduce students to the tools developed to understand a historic event through the lens of the time that an event occurred: Thinking in Time Analysis vs. Revisionism and Re-evaluation of “Ways of War” modeling.

 

- Thinking in Time Analysis Operation Forward Pass: The Pope, Dutch, and Lech

- Brinksmanship: Berlin Air-Drops and Cuban Missile Crisis

- Thinking in Time Analysis of the USMC CAP efforts vs. the shift to McNamara’s attrition

- Afghanistan Analysis: Analyzing Wilson’s War and the USSR defeat in Afghanistan

 

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

 

- Analysis vs. re-evaluation of "Ways of War" Poland and Operation Forward Pass: the Pope, Dutch and Lech.

- Examine Brinkmanship with regard to Berlin air drops, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the fall of the USSR.

- Compare and contrast the USMC Cap efforts vs. attrition(ism) then & now, with emphasis on Zinni's upgade to small war prosecution.

- Synthesize and discuss Wilson's War and the USSR defeat in Afghanistan.
